NEWS

1-5 July 2004

Finally we have managed to finalise the dates and the hotel for the holiday/tournament we are organising in Greece.

The idea is to have a nice, cheap hotel by the sea which will provide a base for excursions and a place for the family to have a nice time and at the same time to be able to use a hall in the hotel for a relaxed tournament.

We have made bookings for the period of 1-5 July this year. The hotel's name is 'Paradise Lost'.Its web address is www.Paradiselost.gr. It is in Tolo, a small town 3km from Nafplio, the ex capital of Greece with its fantastic castle in the Peloponese. It is 1 hour and 15 minutes from Athens and the road is very good.

Olympia and Mycenes together are within easy reach from there. So is Aulis, where the Fleet for Troy gathered and Epidavros with its ancient theatre. We can have excursions to Monemvasia, a Frankish castle, or Spetses and Hydra, two islands which played an important role in the Greek revolution in 1821. We can organise the excursions or you can go alone as you wish.

Tolo and Nafplio are full of bars and tavernas which can cater for both families and single people or couples. There is a lot of nightlife for those who want it and many quiet spots for calmer discussions.

The prices for the hotel are :

Room / breakfast/ with H/B //

1 bed - 50 euros - 55 euros
2 beds- 60 - 75
3 beds- 75 - 95
4 beds -85 - 110

We have to make final bookings in the next 20-25 days (20 - 25 May 2004) so anyone who is interested send me an email at papadoc_gr@yahoo.com

In the next couple of days we will make a web-page for the event rules etc. The idea is that we will have 1 official game a day in order to save time to spend with our families and keep them happy.

The idea is to see old friends and make new ones, since we all share the same interests in this sport.

Regards,
Panos

The game of draughts is popular throughout Africa, where there is an estimated 40,000 recreational draughts players in South Africa alone. It is the game of "English" draughts which has remained popular, and the South African authorities have granted the game official sporting status in the same way that Chess is recognised.

The tour will incorporate visits to Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth where Hugh Devlin will engage in a series of challenge matches against their national and regional champions, simultaneous displays at different venues, and promotional work at schools.

On being presented with his official finalised copy of a rather taxing itinerary comprising of simultaneous game competitions, demonstration events and official tests against the best that South Africa has to offer, Hugh expressed his willingness to "get down to work".

The itinerary for the first week comprises of the following:

Wednesday 17 May 2001:

1. Interview on the TOASTY SHOW (ETV)

2. Visit each of the four farm schools that make up the Bathja Youth Development Programme (www.angelfire.com/yt/byd) based at the Blair Atholl Farm School outside Lanseria.

Thursday, 17 May 2001
